We can often spends many years (decades) falling into the same patterns of behavior often without even noticing that this is actively occurring. When I work with folks to finally start unburdening legacy thoughts that have been causing them turmoil, I often hear the same thought "How did it take me this long to realize this?!"
We become so accustomed to behaving in the same ways, even when they are maladaptive. When we try to change those ingrained patterns these parts of us often put up a wall of resistance, which leads us to think that we can't change. We spend so long trying to shame, blame and deny belief patterns. The antidote to this is to get closer to those parts that we might initially label as "problematic"
Here's my secret: Problematic Behaviors Don't Disappear By Ignoring them. So how do we break these patterns? By getting closer to what is at the root of these issues. Ask yourself these questions:
RECOGNIZE
the thought/pattern that keeps showing up. This is the first very important step. Realizing that our thoughts/parts of us that cause us distress are never our WHOLE SELF. They are simply parts that have developed patterns of thoughts/behaviors based on old beliefs.
Ask yourself: How do you know this part is present in your body?
Where do you feel this ?
What happens just before this part of me takes over?
FOCUS
on the part or belief that continues to distress you.
Check-in to see how you're feeling in this moment towards that part of you that holds this belief?
GET CURIOUS
What might this belief be doing for you ?
Find Compassion,Curiosity, Connectedness, Courage
What are these core beliefs trying to protect you from ?
VISION A CHANGE
What would it look like if these pattern of thoughts/behaviors didn't take over?
What might be scary/fearful if What might happen if these core beliefs work so hard
